The krueppel-like factor 11 (KLF11) gene is expressed in pancreatic islets where it controls the expression of free radical scavengers such as catalase 1 and superoxide dismutase 2. The KLF11 protein is a zinc-finger nuclear transcription factor that controls beta cell functionby acting as a glucose-inducible regulator of INS and PDX1 gene expression. Heterozygous mutations in the KLF11 gene ultimately cause beta cell dysfunction and impaired insulin secretion. Clinically, KLF11-MODY presents as early-onset diabetes mellitus (PMID:33292863).
