Interaction Information:

Comment The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) may affect the function of the pancreas. Angiotensin II has been demonstrated to have significant vasoconstrictive effects on the pancreatic vasculature, which may impair blood flow to the pancreas and pancreatic beta-cells. In addition, activation of the RAS within the pancreas and pancreatic islets may lead to expression of enzymes and receptors that lead to a disruption of islet cell architecture, fibrosis and apoptosis. Inhibition of the RAS by ACE inhibitors and ARBs appears to attenuate this fibrotic, destructive response in the islet cells.
