Comment C. burnetii actively promotes activation of Akt and Erk1/2. Elevated phosphorylation levels are not observed in cells infected in the presence of bacterial protein synthesis inhibitors. Thus Akt and Erk1/2 are heavily involved in maintaining a viable eukaryotic cell via phosphorylation. Treatment of infected cells with Akt and Erk1/2 pathway inhibitors negates Coxiella's anti-apoptotic effec.
