Comment RhlR, but not the LasR acylhomoserine lactone quorum-sensing transcription factor, is required for the virulence of orally ingested P. aeruginosa PA14. Several independent PA14 rhlR mutants, which are deficient for the C4-acylhomoserine lactone-dependent quorum-sensing regulator RhlR, a second acylhomoserine lactone quorum-sensing system in P. aeruginosa, were severely impaired in virulence and killed the flies 3-4 d later than wild-type PA14.
