Comment P. aeruginosa-induced IL-8 promoter activation in human conjunctival epithelial cells occurs through 1) the integrity of both the binding sites for C/EBPbeta and NF-kappaB, 2) the formation of a ternary complex of C/EBPbeta and the RelA subunit of NF-kappaB within IL-8 promoter, and 3) the independent binding of C/EBPbeta and RelA to their respective consensus sites. The enhancement of the IL-8 production by P. aeruginosa has a functional relevance in that it accounts for the activation of an innate immune response by the conjunctival epithelium following the sensing of the whole bacterium presence.
